Description
Throughout history, war and destruction have always provided
inspiration to artists and their work.
A more recent example has been a very little known almost "underground"
painting depicting perhaps one of the most enduring image of the war
in Iraq. The Toppling of the infamous 40-foot bronze statue of the
ex Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein at the Ferdous square in Baghdad.
The painting is a 40” by 32” oil on canvas, the frame not exactly
extravagant.
The painting seemingly a snap shot from history portrays the grand
statue tumbling to its fate. The background clearly one of gloomy
and stormy atmosphere foretelling perhaps of what to come.
While the statue is selfishly dominating the painting by no means
are other elements hindered in the process.
The painter makes fascinating use of mythical figures the purpose of
which may be subject to different interpretations. Two Sumerian like
figures are seen on both sides of the statue engaging in what seems to be
some kind of mystical dialogue, perhaps consigning
the era of Saddam to olden times.
