Description
The Summer Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, since 1998, and the largest and most well-preserved park in China. Construction for the royal family started in the mid 18th century and features natural views, harmonious architecture and glorious floral and garden arrangements.
Over 3,000 ancient man made structures are placed throughout the garden and include pavilions, towers and bridges.
Highlights include Kunming Lake, The Long Corridor, Longevity Hill, and The Marble Boat. The best time to visit is in summer as the lake freezes over in winter and a boat cruise enhances the beauty and serenity.
The Royal Family knew that the best way to escape the city was to go to the lake and Summer Palace to enjoy the afternoon and evening breeze, let the kids roam and enjoy the water and to seek peace with oneself.
