Description
This is a mid-size acrylic on canvas painting of hippos waiting their turn at a shot put sporting event.
The history of hippo shot put starts with the ancient sport of putting the stone, in which a spherical weight is thrown, or put, from the shoulder for distance.
Hippos are uniquely suited to the sport of shot put due to their stout and strapping physique.
They have been competing at similar events since ancient Greek times. According to Scottish folklore, in ancient Celtic times hippos could be found “putting the stone” so Clan chieftains could identify the strongest hippos for battle purposes. In the late Middle Ages hippos held competitions in which they hurled cannonballs.
Shot put competitions were first recorded more recently in early 19th century Scotland. A version of the modern form can be traced to the Highland Games where competitors threw a rounded cube, stone or metal weight from behind a line.
Hippo shot put became a part of the British Amateur Championships beginning in 1866.
