Description
There are only a few days each year when the sun sets directly over the northwest entrance to Active Cove on Patos Island, the most northern of the San Juan Islands in Washington State. Luckily, I was on Patos for one of those days, and made this photograph within a few yards of my campsite. Quite the nice evening!
To this day, there is a historic and still working lighthouse on the northern most point of the island. The waters to the north are all in Canada, including the Strait of Georgia, which is notorious for strong winds and heavy seas. Coast Guard cutters used to supply the lighthouse by mooring at a creative concrete and wooded pier, which was at the point of land visible just to the right of the setting sun in this photograph.
