Description
Patos Island is the northernmost island in the US San Juan Islands, and is protected as a Washington State Marine Park. The Patos Light station was first established in 1893, with subsequent major improvements in 1908 and 1974. It is still operational, flashing white every six seconds to warn marine traffic in the often dangerous waters of Boundary Pass and the southern extent of the Strait of Georgia.
On this evening, the sun was setting over Saturna Island in the Canadian Gulf Islands, illuminating the low clouds over Boundary Pass with a dramatic mix of orange and red. If you look carefully, you can see the light flash from the lens inside the lighthouse.
