Description
What could be finer than watching the sun set on a late August afternoon in the San Juan Islands of Washington State? Imagine, in the moment, sharing that experience amongst all the mariners in tiny Rolfe Cove.
At this small protected anchorage on the northwest side of Matia Island, all eyes (and some cameras) were trained on the sun. From one of the boats came the soft tunes of a penny whistle "piping the sun down" to the horizon. As the last ray of the sun dropped below the horizon, another boat rang "eight bells" from her ship's bell. For those who haven't heard it, the pattern is 4 repetitions of 2 rings each: "ring/ring...ring/ring...ring/ring...ring/ring." In the evening it was used to mark 8 pm and also to announce that the sailor's watch is over. Nice touch for a glorious sunset.
