Description
Patos Island is the most northern of the San Juan Islands in Washington State. The entire island is protected as a state park, and is home to a wide variety of birdlife, most notably Harlequin Ducks...hence the island's name.
This photo was made at sunset, looking northwest up through the entrance to Active Cove where I was camped for the night. The winds tend to be calm here in the early morning and again at sunset, but can be substantial during mid day, turning the calm water in this photo into something more like a washing machine.
I like this image for its symmetry: the tree lined shores, clouds, and reflected setting sun all take your eye to the entrance of the cove, with the Canadian Gulf Islands faintly visible on the horizon.
