Description
Sucia Island is a large and beautiful Marine State Park in Washington State's San Juan Islands. One of the less heavily used campsites is on a narrow strip of land between Mud Bay on the north and Snoring Bay on the south...yes, those are the real names of those bays. This view is to the north on a late August afternoon at high tide. The curved and optically coated surface of the ultra wide angle lens used to make this photograph produces the unusual arcs and rainbow effect of the sun flare.
Mud Bay is called that because when the tide is out, this smooth and calm shallow bay reveals its gray muddy bottom. It's a prime feeding area for some local Great Blue Herons, one of whom decided to "serenade" me from within a few feet of my tent with its very loud and coarse call at about 1 am under a brilliant full moon. If you've ever heard this call, you know exactly what I mean. This instantly waked me from a moon-induced fitful sleep with irrational images of a giant man-eating pterodactyl trying to carry me away. While intending no offense to members of the Audubon Society or the herons of the world, I was not at all amused...an owl would have been way better.
